In the industrial production of manganese alloys, manganese and silicon oxides are reduced from molten slag. Reduction of MnO from the slag in the production of high- carbon ferromanganese proceeds at 1450-1500℃ and is incomplete. Temperature in excess of 1600℃ is needed for reduction of silica in the production of silicomanganese. Reduction temperature can be decreased by decreasing CO partial pressure in gas atmosphere. This presentation discusses carbothermal reduction of manganese and silicon oxides at low temperatures in different gas atmospheres - argon, helium and hydrogen. Silicomanganese with about 15 wt% Si was produced by carbothermal reduction of siliceous manganese fines (Groote Eylandt) in hydrogen at 1200℃. |
